Description

"Star Hymns" by Michael C. Turner
© 2008/2009 ~ Galactic Visions Space Art
Acrylic on stretched canvas using traditional bristle brush techniques ~ 36" X 60"
(Please see the Picture Verse [link] )

A cosmic alignment as viewed though ancient megalithic portals on a planet in a multiple star system. The remains of a companion spiral galaxy (now an irregular galaxy) viewed on its galactic plane dominates the night sky. The companion galaxies "collided" eons ago, ripping star systems from their native galaxies, scattering them across intergalactic space, to become either nomadic star systems or gathered into the gravitational womb of the companion galaxy. Such events happen more frequently than was once theorized by cosmologists. In fact, the Milky Way Galaxy and its nearest companion galaxy, The Andromeda Galaxy, will likely have a similar close encounter in the distant future . . .

("Star Hymns" is #6 in my Christmas in the Stars limited edition card series. [link] Each year I select one of my paintings to use on the cover of my "Christmas in the Stars" Christmas Card series which I began in 1991. I realize that everyone may not appreciate space art in this context however, I trust you shall still enjoy the paintings for what they depict scientifically if not spiritually . . . )

Hello Michael,

I find this work superb, quite majestic. This piece wisely combines a certain impression of minimalism with harmonic emphases of colour and form. The impression of minimalism consists on the main focus on fairly simple forms -- two pillars (one part of a gate) and a galaxy. This leads through a natural gradation to the more subtle forms which envelope these focal points, by the use of colour and form. About the colour, an expansive cool blue appears to contain, in its subtle form, vibrant red and yellow currents and cosmic lights caressed. These blue wisps also bellow softly as mist in varying layers, giving depth and focus; as if the galaxy extended its arms into each individual of its domain, including the one from which we view this galaxy.

I notice three key layers in this piece, in front ghostly wisps hover over the pillars, surrounding them and merging into the backdrop, while these pillars constitute a middle-ground layer. The backdrop is the final layer, merged by the frontal wisps yet contrasted with the pillars, thus creating unity in diversity. The use of lighting enhances this unity of elements, clearly belonging to the same scene with its cosmic outpourings. I find the blue, red, yellow colours, and the crisp white reflections, all enhance the depth of this piece and add contrasting tones effectively. Then as one allows the piece to fill their spirit, subtle details add to the character of the work. The light-bending star around the galaxy, and comet moving towards this focus (enhancing composition), the moons versus the stars, and darkest regions of the backdrop speaking of warm, ancient domain.

Indeed, a splendid piece!
