"Pluto's Stepchildren"
© 2013 Michael C. Turner ~ Galactic Visions Space Art

Pluto, previously known as a planet, is now officially considered only a minor planet or asteroid. This view depicts the ancient formative years of the Pluto system which is theorized to have, or have had, a thin ring system. This ring system along, with Pluto's largest moon Charon and its other companion satellites, was likely created from the debris resulting from the collision of Pluto with another minor planet/asteroid.

Ah yes. The shunned planet. I grew up always knowing that Pluto was a planet and then I heard that it was declared otherwise. My mind was totally blown. Anyway, as to the artwork itself, it's definitely not as colorful as what I'm used to seeing from you, but it does have a nice effect as far as the Pluto theme. And it's certainly not a bad thing for an artist to try different things now and then. I know I've done lots of exploring myself. ^_^
Anyway, good job.

Greetings,

Thank you for your comments. Yes, due to the nature of the theme I used very little colour. This piece was created for a Pluto space art exhibit which required a more realistic approach. If I had created this just for my personal taste, the setting would have been in an exotic star system and the palette would have been much more colorful.

Best regards,
Michael C. Turner

Greetings,exp

Thank you for your comment. Yes, I do indeed anticipate New Horizon's exploration of the Pluto System. Pluto shall always be a planet in my mind regardless of its revised "official" classification as a minor planet/asteroid.

Best regards,

Michael C. Turner

My brother is very excited about NASA's New Horizons project. It's a spacecraft that was sent to the Pluto-Charon system to study it. One of the things NASA's hoping to do with New Horizons is to take high-resolution pictures of the system. It also has an objective to determine whether or not there are indeed rings. It should arrive in the system within the next year or two, so that ought to give you some great new inspiration material. :D
